Personal Work & Freelance

My interests and techniques may broad, but my goal is to always create something of quality, regardless of medium. Illustration, fine art, furniture building, plumbing, I can't help but do things to the best of my ability.

Bodies in Space

Stemming from a love of Sci Fi, I became interested in the actual effects of exposure to outer space on the human body. Movies and TV exaggerate or even just make stuff up, but through researching bioastronautics, I found the truth to be far more interesting.

I selected 14 of these effects and illustrated a series correcting the notion that your head will explode.

While I was working on the project, I was honored to get a brief writeup at Discover Magazine by astronomer Phil Plait.

Poster ArtManos: The Hands of Fate

I was approached to help support the restoration of a cult-classic movie made famous by Mystery Science Theater 3000. I grew up watching MST3K with my parents on saturday afternoons, so I was proud to be involved in the preservation of the worst movie ever made.

Logo Design

It's not work that I seek out, but I will help with logos and branding when asked.

Scientific Illustration

I fell in love with scientific illustration in college, but I've rarely found the opportunity to practice it. I ordered this beetle from Belgium and rehydrated it to pose. The drawing is made using dust, filed from carbon pencils and painted onto color-aid paper with brushes.

Portraits

I had a short time where I was influenced by artists like Brandon Bird

A couple portraits later and it was out of my system, and I was ready to move on to the next thing.

Printmaking

Intaglio printmaking is a really fun process. I especially enjoy the puzzle-solving aspect of the planning phase, where I need to carefully consider all the different processes available to me and get the order of operations right.

Then comes the part where I have to let go of control and just see how the acid bites into the copper plate and what the effect is on the image. It's a great interplay of problem-solving and accepting unexpected outcomes.

Album Art

Collaborating with a musician on album artwork is a rewarding experience. I'll listen from start to finish repeatedly as I'm drawing to keep the energy of the music present in the images.

Toymaking

I reserved a small corner of my home as a hobby space, mostly used for woodworking. Assembling wooden traintracks is an evergreen activity with my children, so it was a joy to take offcuts from another project to make something that can give another layer of dimension to their play.
